Marie Wernimont of Carroll

Marie Josephine Wernimont, 89, of Carroll, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at Addington Place of Carroll.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 28, 2025, at St. Lawrence Church – St. John Paul II Parish in Carroll.  The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Schott.  Music will be by Kathy Halbur and Sherry Loughran.  Lector for the Funeral Mass will be Dan Thies.  Gift Bearers will be Marie’s children.  Honorary Casket Bearers will be Jenny McQueen, Macala Eischeid, Erin Koster, Jessie Ludwig, Leah Carlson, Stephanie Thies, Jillian York, Liz Louis, Ashley Alford, Tiffany Wernimont, and Breely Cleveland.  Casket Bearers will be Kevin Louis, Brian Louis, Chad Thies, Curt Irlbeck, Cody Irlbeck, Cyler Irlbeck, Collin Wernimont, and James Wernimont. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.

A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m. Additional visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. on Monday at the church.

Marie was born December 1st, 1935, in Carroll County, Iowa, the daughter of John and Genevieve (Wieland) Kanne. Growing up, Marie attended St. Lawrence Grade School and St. Angela Academy. She married Walter Wernimont on November 27th, 1954.

 

Marie was a devoted wife and mother of seven children. She loved to garden and tend to her flowers. She enjoyed feeding and watching the birds around her home and was particularly fond of Cardinals. Marie worked various jobs throughout the years and from 1984 to 1988 Marie and Walt owned the restaurant “Grandma’s House” on Main Street. Marie enjoyed spending her free time doing volunteer work at the hospital and New Hope Village Bargain Shoppe. Both Walt and Marie loved to travel and did so until Walt’s passing in 2008.

 

She is survived by her children, Connie (Paul) Louis of Palo, Mern Irlbeck of Carroll, Tom Wernimont of Wisconsin, Carolyn (Dan) Thies of Cedar Rapids, Dick (Marcie) Wernimont of Carroll, Jerry Wernimont of Carroll, and Tim (Renee) Wernimont of North Carolina; 22 grand-children and 40 great-grandchildren; and many other extended family and friends.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband Walter, son-in-law Mike Irlbeck, brothers Earl Kanne, Robert Kanne, and Roy Kanne; sisters Inez Kasperbauer and Lillian Schleisman; in-laws Victor and Elisabeth Wernimont; and her parents John and Genevieve Kanne.
