The Lake City City Council has approved to move forward with an almost $2 million project to dig two completely new wells for the community to utilize. Council reviewed the plans and specs on moving forward with having the wells constructed back in April, as mandated by the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) after the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) assessment of water quality in the state. The EPA announced in November 2024 the addition of seven segments that are now limited and labeled as pollutants under the Clean Water Act. While Lake City’s water was currently up to standard, to meet the new demands that are issued by the EPA and enforced by the DNR, the city sought out guidance from I & S Group, Inc. who designed two new wells to have the city’s water system run more efficiently and remain in compliance with drinking water standards. King Construction was awarded the contract and will begin the approximately $1.75 million project soon, with an expected completion date of November in 2026. Lake City officials will be securing a Water Revenue loan, which leverages federal funding to provide financial assistance and low-interest rate loans for specific projects and borrowing the remaining amount with a principal amount to not exceed $1,929,000.
