Rep. Williams’ Legislative Update: Week 15

The 2025 Iowa Legislature is now in the final week of its initial timetable, and District 11 Rep. Craig Williams (R-Manning) reported a flurry of activity in the Iowa House, with 52 bills presented and 44 making it to floor debate. Williams highlighted several significant measures, cautioning against growing government overreach amid the rush to adjourn by May 2. Among the major bills, Williams emphasized House File (HF) 978, which passed 84-6. This legislation would establish a tightly regulated framework allowing supervised clinical use of psilocybin to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), particularly among veterans and first responders. He also praised HF 516, requiring Iowa medical schools to prioritize in-state students and encourage rural healthcare rotations to combat physician shortages. Williams backed several other bipartisan initiatives, including creating catastrophic savings accounts through HF 988 that would allow Iowans to cover costs associated with disasters, similar to health savings accounts (HSAs). Williams noted the approval of HF 1002, which supports volunteer firefighters through service awards and tax-deferred benefits, and HF 1015¸which prohibits counties from imposing extra fees on ATV and UTV operators. Williams also celebrated a Capitol visit from Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton fifth-graders, who had a surprise meeting with Gov. Kim Reynolds. Williams urged vigilance in the session’s final days, noting the risk of mistakes amid the push to finish on time. Legislators’ pay and expense reimbursement ends May 2, but the session could extend several days beyond that deadline.
