The City of Coon Rapids announced today (Thursday) that the Riverside Trail will be closed for several months beginning next week as a resurfacing project gets underway. The trail will be unavailable starting March 17 and will be closed into May while crews work to complete tree trimming, pavement milling, and adding a new layer of asphalt. The 2.5-plus-mile trail connects the Riverside Campground to the trailhead on Velvet Avenue north of town and also runs along Coon Rapids’s eastern edge. Initially, they had planned to replace the aging asphalt with concrete but switched to asphalt resurfacing due to cost constraints. The $410,000 project is funded through contributions from the City of Coon Rapids, Community Foundation of Carroll County, Carroll County Conservation, and private fundraising. The trail is expected to reopen for Memorial Day weekend, dependent on the weather during construction.
