Barb Boldt of Carroll is heavily involved in the upcoming 5K run/walk called Blood Sweat and Beers scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 8, at Swan Lake State Park. Boldt said she has a very personal reason for why she made a call to find out how she could help raise funds and awareness.
Boldt was diagnosed with Leukemia two years ago and received a stem-cell transplant and reports she is doing great. Now she is working to provide support to others afflicted with blood cancers.
The money can be used for just about any costs incurred, including transportation costs, even if it is treatment outside of the state. Boldt said you just have to be a resident of Iowa to apply. The race will begin at 11 a.m. at the East Side Shelter at Swan Lake. True Timing of Des Moines is coming in for the official-timed race and will be placing a chip under each race bib. But whether you do this for a personal-best time or for the fun of it, everyone will receive a gift for participating.
Following the race, food which was donated by Cookies of Wall Lake, beer donated by Exile Brewery in Des Moines and Root Beer donated by A & W will be served at Swan Lake State Park at the East Shelter Area after the event. Loose Affiliation of Lincoln, Neb. will provide entertainment later that night at the Carrollton beginning at 8 p.m and is open to the public. Registration for the 5K is $45 and a companion ticket is $20. The after party is open to the public for a free-will donation. Registration can be done by following the link with this story at our website, or at Swan Lake the day of the event. To date, Boldt said they have raised $12,900, well over her goal of $10,000 with 215 participants.
