Kuemper, Ar-We-Va, and Audubon Softball Pick Up Wins as Area Teams go 4-5 Monday Night; Full Softball Recap

Kuemper at Shenandoah

 

Kuemper picked up two conference wins as they swept their double header against Shenandoah Monday evening.

In game one, Kuemper grabbed two runs to start off their offense as Shenandoah scored a solo run, giving the Knights the 2-1 advantage. Both went scoreless in the second and third innings, but Kuemper started their big offensive push. They’d add six runs in the fourth and three in the fifth, while only allowing Shenandoah to score twice in those two innings. Jordan Schwabe had great at bats, going 4-5 and being credited for two RBI. Likewise, Kenadee Loew went 3-5, crushed two doubles, and was credited for three RBI. 

Leading 11-3 in the seventh, Kuemper added one more run in the top of the seventh to take a 12-3 lead. Kenzie Schon closed out the game in the circle, going three innings pitched, allowing one run off one hit and one walk while recording three strikeouts. Chloe Venteicher started in the circle for the first three innings, where she allowed two runs, one of them earned, off four hits while recording five strikeouts. Kuemper won the first game by a dominant 12-3.

Kamryn Venner started in the circle for Kuemper in game two and stayed strong. Kuemper got out to a better start in game two, grabbing six runs in the first two innings, taking the 6-0 lead. While Venner allowed five hits and six walks in her six innings pitched, she only allowed three earned runs and recorded eight strikeouts. Shenandoah grabbed a solo run in the bottom of the third, and Kuemper responded with five more runs added to their total in the top of the fourth, taking a 11-1 lead. Schwabe was even more efficient in game two, going 4-4 and was credited for three more RBI, five total on the night. Kenadee Loew had a Grand Slam Home Run in and finished with 5 RBI.  Shenandoah added two more runs to their total, making a dent in the Kuemper lead at 11-3. Kuemper closed out the game in the sixth inning as they brought home five more runners and won game two 16-3. 

Kuemper improves to 14-9 overall on the season and 7-4 in the Hawkeye Ten Conference. Kuemper is in action next as they travel to take on conference leader Atlantic on Tuesday, June 22nd.

North Polk at Carroll

Carroll battled hard against North Polk, but gave up a run late and ultimately fell Monday evening. Carroll got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning when Chloe Gallegos scored Shay Sinnard off an RBI Single. Sinnard got on base thanks to a double. North Polk matched that run in the top of the fourth, tying up the game at 1-1. Despite North Polk getting 11 hits against Camryn Schable, the Tiger defense did well to keep the runs low and make plays when they could. Schable in the circle for the Tigers allowed one earned run off 11 hits and two walks while recording three strikeouts. 

North Polk in the top of the sixth took advantage of two errors by the Tigers to bring home their second runner and take their first lead of the game at 2-1. Carroll was unable to find success in the batter’s box in the bottom of the sixth and seventh as North Polk edged out the Tigers 2-1 for the win. 

Carroll falls to 11-14 on the season and 0-11 in the Raccoon River Conference. The Tigers continue their busy week as they have a non-conference game against East Sac of Class 2A on Tuesday, June 22nd.

Boyer Valley at Ar-We-Va

Ar-We-Va had to battle late to keep their lead as they held on to defeat Boyer Valley Monday night. Boyer Valley and Ar-We-Va started off the first inning going three up and three down to remain scoreless. Jadeyn Smith of Ar-We-Va gave the Rockets a good look in the top of the second with two strikeouts looking. The Rockets grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second as Smith, Maggie Ragaller, and Jamie Hausman scored, giving Ar-We-Va the 3-0 lead. Boyer Valley had a runner on second with two outs in the top of the third, but were able to score two runners off an RBI double and RBI triple to cut down the lead to 3-2. 

Ar-We-Va in the bottom of the third brought home the same three runners, Smith, Ragaller, and Hausman, to extend their lead to 6-2. Ragaller and Hausman were able to score off an error by the third baseman. Smith turned on the jets and took advantage of a wild pitch to score for Ar-We-Va. Boyer Valley started to chip away at the Ar-We-Va lead as they’d add a run in the top of the fourth and fifth to cut the lead down to 6-4. Ar-We-Va responded to those two runs in the bottom of the fifth when Smith scored off Ragaller’s RBI single, and Timberlen Koch was credited with an RBI walk to score Ragaller, extending their lead to 8-4. Boyer Valley wasn’t done yet, they’d grab two more runs in the top of the sixth, one off a wild pitch for Ar-We-Va. 

Smith and the Rocket defense finished the job in the top of the seventh. Smith grabbed a strikeout, Sara Schurke tossed a grounder over to Sophie Jackson for out two, and Ragaller scooped up the grounder and tossed it to Ragaller for out number three, giving the Rockets the 8-6 victory. 

The Rockets improved to 7-5 on the season and 7-4 in the Rolling Valley Conference. The Rockets are on the road on Wednesday, June 23 as they take on Exira-EHK.

Audubon at LoMa

Audubon picked up a major win against Western Iowa Conference foe LoMa Monday night. The Wheelers started off the night strong with three runs in the top of the first, two of those scored from Kali Irlmeier. LoMa matched those three runs in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 3-3. While both teams didn’t add any runs in the second inning, Audubon widened the gap significantly in the top of the third. Kylee Hartl scored a runner off a 3-2 count, Hannah Thygesen got a three RBI double, Sydney Beymer got an RBI single, and finally Katelyn Nielsen grabbed an RBI triple, giving Audubon a big 10-3 lead. 

LoMa added solo runs in the third, fifth, and sixth, and attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, which was cut short as they scored two more runs. Audubon added to their score with a solo run in the top of the sixth. That big third inning for the Wheelers proved to be the bookend as Audubon grabbed a noteworthy win over LoMa 11-8. 

Audubon improves to 12-6 overall on the season and 8-6 in the Western Iowa Conference. Audubon continues their week of play with a road game against IKM-Manning on Tuesday, June 22nd.

The East Sac Raiders dropped a tough conference game against Sioux Central Monday evening. The Rebels and Raiders got through the first inning without any runs, leaving the game scoreless. In the bottom of the second, Meredith Brown crushed an RBI double toward the fence to score a runner and give the Raiders the 1-0 lead. Sioux Center’s response in the top of the third was six runners scored and taking the lead for the first time at 6-1. Mary Bontrager for East Sac got a base hit in the bottom of the third, but the Raiders couldn’t get her home. 

Sioux Central was also unable to score any runners in the top of the fourth thanks to a 2-5 East Sac play that ended the inning. East Sac batting in the bottom of the fourth added another run when Abby Schueneman was credited with an RBI off a reach on error, cutting down the Rebel lead to 6-2. Sioux Central was able to continue scoring runs in the top of the fifth and sixth, scoring four and two runs respectively, and closing out the bottom of the sixth with a fly out to the catcher, a strikeout, and a 6-3 play to ultimately win 12-2. 

East Sac falls to 10-6 on the season and 5-3 in the Twin Lakes Conference. East Sac continues their busy week as they are scheduled to play a non-conference game against Carroll of Class 3A on Tuesday, June 22nd.

Coon Rapids Bayard saw tough competition against CAM Anita Monday evening. CAM Anita got on the board in the bottom of the first and second with two runs in each of those innings. In their at bats, Coon Rapids Bayard saw Cassidy Baker go 2-2 with two singles and Breely Clayburg going 1-2 with a double. Cam Anita with two outs in the bottom of the fourth pulled out the win by scoring eight runners and ending the game at 12-0.

Coon Rapids Bayard falls to 5-13 on the season and 4-8 in the Rolling Valley Conference. The Crusaders are in action next when they entertain Woodbine on Wednesday, June 23rd.

Glidden Ralston went up against Exira-EHK in a non-conference matchup Monday evening. The Exira-EHK Spartans got out quick in this contest with 11 runs in the first inning and added one more in the bottom of the second. Glidden Ralston had some of their usual players out of the lineup due to injury as they had Vanessa Koehler, Tiela Janssen, and Summer Toms take the circle in this game. Koehler and Janssen each grabbed a strikeout. Exira-EHK won the game in three innings 12-0. 

Glidden Ralston plays game two of four on the week when they welcome South Central Calhoun to their home field on Tuesday, June 22nd.
