Jayden Kirsch has led the state in saves for a good portion of the season. Friday in the opening round of Regional play she got help from the defense before coming up big in Penalty kicks. Storm Lake and Carroll each had 6 shots on goal in the 1st half but neither team was able to score. Kirsch and the defense were solid in the 2nd half as well stuffing everything Storm Lake through at them.

The offense was doing their part and getting looks as Emersyn Walsh took 5 shots on goal, Haley Berger, Paige Potthoff and Kiley Riesberg each had a shot on goal. Just like Storm Lake the Tigers couldn’t find the back of the net. The match went into two overtimes before needing to be decided by Penalty Kicks.
It looked bleak for Carroll early as Storm Lake hit both of their first two shots and looked in good shape. Kate Kersey stepped in for Carroll with her team needing to make a penalty kick or they would trail 2-0 with only 3 shots left for each team. Kersey got the Tigers on the board and switched the momentum. Kirsch says she needed to focus more and did that after Storm Lake scored the first two. She stopped 2 of the next 3 shots and got some help when Storm Lake missed wide with their 4th attempt. Emersyn Walsh tied it up knocking in her penalty kick to make it 2-2. After a Kirsch save Macey Weber stepped in and drilled it into the corner of the net and the Tigers advanced to the Regional Semifinals on Wednesday at home against Webster City. Weber says she was nervous but had practiced that shot a lot and leaned on her training. The sophomore didn’t look nervous as she got the goalie going the wrong way and scored easily.
Carroll improved to 4-14 and will host Webster City who sits at 5-11 for the right to play in the Regional Final on June 4th.
