Kuemper At Newell Fonda
Newell Fonda 80
Kuemper 40
A young Kuemper Knights squad began their 2020-2021 season with a loss but came away with ways to improve. The Knights were neck-in-neck with the defending 1A state champion Newell Fonda Mustangs in the beginning, at one point trailing 10-9. Those nine points scored by Seniors Sarah Steffes and Brooklyn Gifford, and Sophomore Catherine Mayhall, each draining a three pointer. This would be the closest Kuemper would get to Newell Fonda’s lead. Behind Newell Fonda’s Maggie Walker, who scored 10 points in the first quarter, the Mustangs led 25-11 and kept the scoring hot all night.
The Knights spread out their scoring among their starters in the first half. Steffes and Gifford posted six points each while Sophomore Catherine Mayhall scored five points and Sophomore Akuet Malek, Senior Kyndal Hilgenberg, and Junior Karly Baumhover each banked in two points. The Knights trailed 50-23 going into the second half and tried to keep up with the Mustangs aggressive playstyle.
The Knights showed great ball handling and passing at times behind Mayhall who ended her night with 14 points and seven rebounds. Defensively, Malek used her length to her advantage and posted eight rebounds, and seven blocks. Gifford, Steffes, and Mayhall scored the final 17 points for the Knights in the second half. While not slowing down their game on both sides of the ball, the Mustangs were too much to handle as the Knights lose their season opener 80-40.
The Knights will rebound next week to face the Carroll Tigers on Tuesday, December 1st.
