Mike “Spike” Underberg of Grimes formerly of Carroll

Mike “Spike” Underberg, 73 of Grimes, and formerly of Carroll, passed away peacefully Monday, March 30, 2026 at his home in Grimes surrounded by his family.

A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday, April 4, 2026 at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll.  At the conclusion of the visitation there will be a Prayer Service and a sharing of memories.

Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll and online condolences may be left for Spike’s family at www.sharpfuneral.com.

Spike was born August 3, 1952 to Augustine and Alma (Bruning) Underberg. He grew up in Breda, Iowa.

From Spike’s first marriage he gained a daughter (Lisa) and had a son (David).  In 2002, Spike married Marilyn (Kennebeck) Koster.  From this union he gained a son (Barry) and a daughter (Lola).

Spike loved truck driving and seeing the beautiful country. In 1991, Spike quit trucking when he lost his best friend on the road. That led Spike into being self-employed and willing to help anyone that asked (and even some that didn’t ask).  In 2013, Spike and Marilyn moved to Grimes and Spike went back to what he loved and started hauling US mail to surrounding states.  Spike continued to truck until 2025 when he retired due to health issues.

Spike is survived by his wife Marilyn; his four children: Lisa (Doug), David (Jenny), Barry (Debbie), and Lola; his grandchildren: Aaron (Alyssa), Ethan, Paige, Maybellene, Lilybelle, Cameron, Ari, Lily, Ivy and 2 great grandchildren; his brothers: Tom (Joann), Jim (Mary), Ted, Harlan (Paula); his in-laws: Joyce (Randy), Phyllis, Jim, Julie, Denny (Penny), Mark, Kenny (KB), Andy (Lynn), Dean (Angela), Virginia, Sara (Jeff).

He was proceeded in death by his parents, stepfather Russ DeBourgh, his sisters-in-law Katie and Donna, as well as 6 unborn grandchildren.

Spike’s family would like to express their gratitude for many thoughts and prayers. It is all appreciated. Please join us at Sharp Center for the lunch and more stories.
