Republican gubernatorial candidate and former Iowa Representative Brad Sherman says he’s campaigning to restore baseline principles about government in Iowa and America. Sherman, who was a pastor for most of his adult life, served as the representative for District 91 for one term before announcing his candidacy for governor nearly a year ago. Sherman says his motivation to run came after seeing how many people were dissatisfied with how their government operated.
Sherman says he has a broad range of experience, ranging from heavy equipment operations to competitive shooting, that helps him see problems from many angles. He says that experience has shown him that government tends to solve problems with an intended outcome rather than from a principled position.
Sherman has made over 300 stops in all 99 counties over the last year, and he says most Iowans are concerned about many of the same things.
Sherman recently criticized his fellow GOP gubernatorial candidate, Adam Steen, for his campaign’s role in challenging Eddie Andrews’s eligibility to appear on the Republican primary ballot. Sherman called the move “a dirty trick,” but he says the party will need to get behind whoever the nominee is.
Winning the party’s nomination and the governor’s race is his primary goal, but Sherman has another goal in his campaign. He frequently quotes the nation’s founders and wants Iowans to be better attuned to how their government should function and how most modern politicians have lost sight of those guiding principles.
