The Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education approved of a school calendar for the 2026-27 school year, that does not include the early outs on Fridays for professional development. During the Feb. 19 meeting, the board held the public hearing, with no official comments presented during or prior. During the action items, board members discussed concerns that community members had mentioned when casually talking to them about the change. A decision was tabled, after a request was made to send out a survey to community members for additional feedback. Superintendent Dr. Casey Berlau says the survey results did not provide clear guidance as to a consensus of what parents would prefer.
Board Member Hunter Harmening asked if there would be an alternative to meet the reasoning behind the recommendation for the early outs without changing the school calendar.
High School Principal Joe Blazevich says having professional learning community (PLC) meet during the school day would still take away from students as class times would need to be adjusted or shortened. Harmening asked if a common prep time could be utilized instead so it wasn’t taking away from class, as Fairview Elementary does have a schedule like that. While possible, no decision to pursue that option was made. Harmening motioned to approve of Calendar A, with no early outs, second by Jim Friel. The vote passed with Jill Johnston being the sole no vote. The upcoming school calendar will follow suit with the one that was approved for the current school year.
