Lake City Man Pleads Guilty To Federal Drug Trafficking, Firearms Charges

A Lake City man faces significant time behind bars in a federal prison after pleading guilty Wednesday to drug trafficking and firearm charges. According to records from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa, 34-year-old Clayton Brown admitted to one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. During the plea hearing in Sioux City, Brown acknowledged his involvement in a drug conspiracy that distributed at least four pounds of methamphetamine over about eight months in 2025. Prosecutors allege he twice sold more than 80 grams of pure methamphetamine in October 2025 to an individual cooperating with law enforcement. A follow-up search of Brown’s home later led to the seizure of a Glock handgun, methamphetamine, marijuana, more than $2,000 in cash, and other drug-related items. Authorities say Brown has seven prior felony convictions that prohibited him from possessing guns. The case was investigated as part of the Department of Justice’s (DOC) Operation Take Back America. Brown’s sentencing will be scheduled following a presentence report, and he remains in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service for the time being. Brown faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison, with the potential for a life sentence and fines exceeding $10 million. The Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Laboratory, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) all contributed to the investigation.
