For the third consecutive week, fuel prices continued their sharp increases across the state, according to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) and AAA-Iowa. As of Wednesday, March 18, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $3.35, up 16 cents from last week and 45 cents above last year’s average. The national average on Wednesday spiked 26 cents over the prior seven days to $3.84 per gallon. Diesel prices in Iowa rose even more quickly, jumping 21 cents to a statewide average of $4.63 per gallon. Currently, prices are $1.32 higher per gallon than a year ago. Local prices are still more palatable than the national average for diesel, which stands at $5.07 per gallon. Looking at the Des Moines Terminal, E10 was priced at $2.44, Unleaded 87 at $2.87, ULSD#2 at $3.41, ULSD#1 at $3.58, and E70 at $2.20. As for heating fuels, propane prices held steady at $1.62 per gallon, home heating oil jumped 22 cents to $4.03 per gallon, and natural gas prices at the Henry Hub reporting site dipped 11 cents to $3.04 per MMBtu.
