Officials in Audubon County are seeking input from residents about the feasibility of a new child care center following last fall’s closure of the only licensed center in the county. A small group serving as a temporary board under the Audubon County Early Childhood Organization (ACECO) is reviewing whether to reopen the Children’s Nest, permanently close the operation, or develop a new center-based child care facility elsewhere in the county. The group has spent the last several months reviewing financial information, child care supply and demand, wage competitiveness, and overall community needs. Available data suggest Audubon County currently has about one licensed child care slot for every three children who may need care. While in-home providers remain a key part of the county’s child care system, many report operating at or beyond capacity, and a center-based option could help complement those services. Operating a child care center would likely require tuition increases and outside financial support to remain sustainable and offer competitive wages. Preliminary estimates suggest weekly infant tuition could rise to $235, with rates for children between two and five years old potentially increasing to $195. Community feedback will help guide next steps. The ACECO is requesting that residents complete an 18-question online survey to better gauge community needs and interest in a new center. Responses are anonymous, and honest feedback will shape how county leaders proceed. A link to the survey is included below.
