The Manning Regional Healthcare Center (MRHC) Recovery Center hosts one of the first presentations with the Hidden in Plain Sight Camper. IKM-Manning educators heard from staff from the Recovery Center on statistics regarding substance use, specifically in youth, and put their knowledge to the test in a potential real life situation in the camper. IKM-Manning staff group in teams of four and were given five minutes to locate 43 hidden items that could potentially indicate substance use or risky behaviors. After time is up, facilitators of the presentation review the items missed and discuss more on slang terms, where the substances are purchased and behavior signs to be aware of. IKM-Manning School Counselor, Rachel Merkel says “The staff at IKM-Manning Schools truly valued the hands-on experience with the Hidden in Plain Sight camper during our professional development. We learned so much about current trends and were surprised to see how everyday objects, many commonly found in schools and homes, can be used to hide drugs and alcohol. I highly recommend that anyone who works with or cares for children take advantage of the incredible educational opportunity MRHC provides through this program.” The program is geared for adults 21 and older to increase the awareness and understanding, in hopes to strengthen prevention efforts throughout the area. Director of MRHC Recovery Center Taya Vonnahme says “The Hidden in Plain Sight camper gives adults a powerful, eye-opening experience. When adults know what to look for and how to start the conversation, they can intervene earlier and support teens in healthier choices.” School, community groups or organizations that are interested in reserving the Hidden in Plain Sight camper for education or training events can reach out to Neeka Jacobsen by emailing neeka.jacobsen@mrhcia.com.
