The Carroll City Council is scheduled to meet Monday evening for what officials believe should be a relatively quick meeting. The council convenes at 5:15 p.m. on March 9 in the council chambers at Carroll City Hall. According to City Manager Aaron Kooiker, the city will recognize the service of longtime Carroll firefighter Brad Ruhnke as he retires from the volunteer service. The council will also consider the second reading of the East Street vacation for the planned expansions at Kuemper Catholic’s primary campus. Officials previously approved the first of three required readings and declined to waive the second and third to give the public the opportunity to comment if they desired. Kooiker says there have been some fees associated with the vacation, but Kuemper is covering those expenses. Interestingly, all the properties on this section of East Street are tax exempt, so eliminating maintenance, including underground utilities, snow removal, and so on, will actually save the city money in the long run. The council will then consider a resolution authorizing the use of urban renewal funds for streetlight replacements in the central business district. Streetlight maintenance is generally routine business, but Kooiker says they’ve run into challenges with the decorative posts in and around downtown.
The total cost for the 10 poles and fixtures is $98,279.60. The only other item of significance on Monday’s agenda is a change order for the replacement of a pump at the water high service station. The initial contract price for this work was $448,000, but engineers and city officials are proposing an $11,334 change order to increase piping diameters to reduce head loss and improve long-term performance. The Monday, March 9, Carroll City Council meeting is open to the public and will be live-streamed via the city’s YouTube channel.
