Gov. Kim Reynolds has ordered flags across Iowa to be flown at half-staff in honor of two Iowa soldiers killed by Iranian retaliatory strikes while serving overseas. Reynolds announced the order following the deaths of 45-year-old Maj. Jeffery O’Brien of Waukee and 20-year-old Sgt. Declan Coady of West Des Moines. The two soldiers were members of the 103rd Sustainment Command, based in Des Moines, and were stationed at Port Shuaiba in Kuwait. Reynolds says, “Our hearts are broken by the deaths of Major Jeffrey O’Brien and Sgt. Declan Coady, two brave Iowa soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice to secure freedom and peace. On behalf of a grateful state, Kevin and I offer our prayers and condolences for their families, and we ask all Iowans to stand united in support of our fallen soldiers and those who loved them.” Reynolds’ sentiments were echoed by Iowa’s other state and federal elected officials. Flags will remain at half-staff immediately until sunset on the day of the soldiers’ final interment, which has not yet been scheduled. Flags will be lowered at the Iowa State Capitol Building, within the Capitol Complex, and at all public buildings, grounds, and facilities. Individuals, businesses, schools, local governments, and other organizations are encouraged to lower their flags as a sign of respect.
