Several Local Students From Surrounding Schools Advancing To State For IHSSA’s Individual Speech Competition

Several local schools will be sending multiple individual speech pieces to the Iowa High School Speech Association (IHSSA)’s State Speech contest after earning top marks at district’s this past weekend. Kuemper Catholic hosted District Speech for the northwest district with students from East Sac County (ESC), Coon Rapids-Bayard (CR-B), Ar-We-Va, IKM-Manning, and South Central Calhoun (SCC). ESC has four students advancing in categories of Improv, Spontaneous Speaking, Poetry and Musical theatre. CR-B had 12 entries perform, with ten earning a I or Excellent rating. Ar-We-Va had six students perform in nine events, with five acts advancing on. IKM-Manning had eight students perform various acts in poetry, after dinner speaking, and more with all eight students advancing in at least one of their performances. SCC Titans had six students compete at districts, with five advancing to the state contest which is scheduled for Saturday, March 14 at the Denison-Schleswig High School in Denison. The Audubon Community School District participated at the district contest in Atlantic, sending nine students in ten entries, with seven of them advancing to the state competition on March 14 in Council Bluffs. State qualifiers that earn top marks will then have the opportunity to selected for IHSSA Individual Events All State- Festival in Cedar Falls at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) later in March.
