The remnants of a multi-day bale fire continued to burn late Sunday evening at a farm just west of Carroll. According to Carroll Fire Chief Dan Hannasch, the Carroll County Communications Center received a report at approximately 12:42 p.m. on Saturday that stacked stover bales at a farm in the 19000 block of Ivy Avenue, just south of U.S. Highway 30, had ignited. When firefighters arrived on scene, the fire had begun to spread through the remaining stored stover. Many of the bales were positioned adjacent to a metal outbuilding, but Hannasch says damage to that structure was solely cosmetic. Crews remained on the scene until around 11:15 p.m. Saturday night, working to bring the fire under control via water application and the use of farm equipment to break up the bales. Water demand was so high that operators in Carroll and Arcadia had to activate their system pumps to maintain adequate pressure due to the draw. The most dangerous aspects of the fire had been extinguished prior to Sunday, but the remnants continued to smolder through the weekend. Firefighters have and will continue to make intermittent stops to monitor for flare-ups. Agencies assisting the Carroll Fire Department include the Breda, Halbur, Arcadia, and Westside Fire Departments, Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Carroll County Emergency Management, and the Carroll County Dispatch Center.
