Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird recently released the top 10 consumer complaints and scams reported to her office in 2025, warning Iowans to remain vigilant as reports continue to rise. According to the AG’s Office, the Consumer Protection Division handled more than 4,000 complaints last year, marking the second consecutive year of increases. Used auto and vehicle repair complaints topped the list with 783 reports, including faulty repairs, failure to disclose prior damage, and financing issues. Imposter scams ranked second with 398 complaints, involving fake job offers, online shopping schemes, and government impersonators. Internet-related complaints followed with 319 reports, including hacked accounts and disputes with service providers. Home improvement and housing-related complaints rounded out the top five categories. Bird says, “We’ve seen an increase in scammers and fraudsters preying on people they know are vulnerable, pretending to be someone they aren’t. Our office takes these offenses seriously and acts quickly. We will work with you to ensure justice is served.” Bird urges Iowans to research businesses before making purchases and to avoid sending money electronically to unknown individuals. She also reminds residents that legitimate government agencies will not threaten arrest or demand payment over the phone. Rounding out the top 10 for 2025 were personal goods complaints, personal services, home goods and services, lending, and healthcare.
