For the second year in a row, Iowa is among the top 10 states in the nation for the highest property tax burden, according to a recent study from personal finance company WalletHub. The 2026 Property Taxes by State report compares real estate and vehicle property taxes nationwide. Iowa ranked eighth highest in real estate taxes, while the state ranked 30th in vehicle property taxes. Iowans pay an estimated $2,897 in real estate taxes on the state’s median home value. When calculated against the median U.S. home value, that figure rises to $4,634, behind states like New Jersey, Illinois, and New York. For vehicle owners, the report found Iowa’s taxes average $291 per vehicle. Nationally, the average U.S. household pays $3,119 in real estate property taxes each year. In the 26 states that levy vehicle property taxes, residents pay an additional average of $499 annually. New Jersey, Illinois, and Connecticut have the highest property tax rates in the nation, while Nevada, Alabama, and Hawaii have the lowest.
