A homeless man residing over in Jefferson has been taken into custody for allegedly violating his sex offender registry requirements for a second time and providing false information to law enforcement. According to Greene County District Court records, 34-year-old Vincent Allen Michael Nichols reported to inform Greene County law enforcement on Feb. 10 that he was moving into the area, as per his requirements for his sex offender registry and that he was staying in a timber on the southwest side of town. Greene County Sheriff Office deputies attempted to make contact with him near the area he claimed to be residing in, but were unable to locate Nichols or any of his belongings. Nichols was later located on Feb. 11 at a house in Jefferson and the resident of the property reported to law enforcement that Nichols has been staying there the past few days. Nichols was taken into custody on Feb. 12 on an arrest warrant for sex offender registration violation, second or subsequent offense, a class D felony, and sex offender providing false information, first offense, an aggravated misdemeanor. He remains in the custody at the Greene County Jail on a $7,000 bond with a preliminary hearing scheduled for Feb. 18. Nichols was charged with assault with intent to commit sexual abuse in Buena Vista County in 2014, requiring him to register as a Tier II offender. The first sex offender registration violation in Woodbury County in 2023 added an additional ten years to the special sentence of registering on the sex offender registry. If convicted of the new charges in Greene County, Nichols can face a maximum sentence of up to seven years in prison and over $18,000 in fines, plus a special sentence requiring to register as a sexual offender for the remainder of his life.
