DNR Fines Essentia $8,000 For Discharges From Lytton Production Facility

A Sac County business has been ordered to pay $8,000 in fines to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for illegal discharges originating from its production facility in Lytton. According to the administrative consent order released yesterday (Thursday) against AMPC, LLC, doing business as Essentia Protein, the DNR alleges the processing facility failed to maintain an accurate storm water pollution prevention plan (SWPPP) and repeatedly allowed blood and processing waste to flow into the town’s storm sewer system. Specifically, the DNR notes issues of noncompliance from leaking storage silos, a July 2025 breach at the facility’s lagoon, and discharges into county tile that resulted in excess E. coli and ammonia reaching the West Fork Camp Creek. The DNR ordered Essentia to cease illegal discharges and develop a plan within 60 days to comply with the conditions of its operation permit. Additionally, the company was ordered to pay an $8,000 civil penalty. The DNR’s complete administrative consent order against Essentia is included below.
