The Iowa State Patrol has officially released the name of the student killed and more details on the bus rollover accident in northern Calhoun County on Wednesday. At approximately 11:06 a.m., the Iowa Lakes Community College baseball team was traveling southbound in a 2019 ELKC bus on IA Highway 4 near Marengo Avenue when the 74-year-old driver, whose name was withheld, failed to negotiate the curve. The bus started to enter the gore area between the two roads, the driver overcorrected and caused the bus to roll over on its side. Two of the occupants were ejected from the bus and trapped under the vehicle after it came to a rest. Several injuries were reported from all 33-passengers, with one fatality, 19-year-old Carter Johnson, from Rapid City, S.D. During a press conference at Iowa Lakes Community College, Iowa Lakes President Scott Stokes said the entire campus extends their condolences to Johnson’s family, and thank the swift actions for the law enforcement and first responders from several counties for quick response in aiding all the students involved. Iowa Lakes will be offering counseling and additional academic support to all students in need.
