Carroll County Conservation Invites Public To Lend A Hand In Honeysuckle Removal At Swan Lake

Carroll County Conservation invites the public to join them in a dedicated month-long effort to remove an invasive plant from the confines of Swan Lake State Park. At 12 p.m. on Feb. 21, March 7, and March 21, volunteers will meet at the Conservation Education Center, and Park Technician Geoffrey Perkins will distribute equipment to remove honeysuckle bushes that have infested areas of the park. Different varieties of honeysuckle were brought to the United States from Eurasia initially for use as ornamental shrubs, wildlife habitat, and erosion control. However, conservationists quickly learned that the shrubs spread rapidly and outcompeted native species easily. People of all ages are welcome to lend a hand, but organizers ask that participants dress for the weather and wear closed-toe shoes. Questions about the effort can be directed to Carroll County Conservation by calling 712-792-4614 or by email using the address included below.
