As millions of Americans prepare to celebrate Super Bowl Sunday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is urging fans to plan ahead and make safe choices behind the wheel. Through its “Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk” campaign, NHTSA is reminding the public to be a sober driving MVP and ensure everyone gets home safely after the big game. The agency encourages hosts to confirm that guests have sober rides home, help arrange ride-hailing or public transportation, and keep nonalcoholic drinks available for designated drivers. Hosts are encouraged to stop anyone from driving after drinking and not serve alcohol to minors. Partygoers who plan to drink should designate a sober driver in advance or use a taxi or ride-hailing service, as data show that those who put in the effort to make a plan are far more likely to follow through on it. NHTSA also stresses the importance of seat belt use for all occupants. Law enforcement agencies throughout the state are partnering with NHTSA to increase presence on Iowa’s roadways during Super Bowl weekend. Previous years’ data show traffic fatalities spike nationwide after the game. As of Friday, Iowa has recorded 24 fatalities so far this year, 26.3 percent over last year at this time and 50 percent higher than the five-year low.
