Iowa ranks among the best states in the nation for drivers, according to a new WalletHub report analyzing driving conditions nationwide. The personal-finance company’s “2026 Best and Worst States to Drive In” study ranked Iowa second overall, based on a comparison of all 50 states across 31 metrics. Those factors included gas prices, traffic congestion, road quality, safety, and vehicle ownership costs. WalletHub found Iowa performs especially well in limiting rush-hour delays, ranking sixth for the share of traffic congestion during peak hours. The state also placed ninth for average gas prices and 11th for car theft rates. Other rankings for Iowa included 14th for road quality, 17th for car dealerships per capita, and 23rd for traffic fatality rates. Vermont was ranked as the best state in the country to drive in, with Kansas coming in third. Montana, Washington, and Hawaii rounded out the bottom of the list as the worst states in the nation. On average, U.S. drivers spend more than two days, about 49 hours, stuck in traffic. The full WalletHub report is available below.
