Robert Smith of Carroll formerly of Lake City

Robert Louis Smith, age 88, of Carroll, IA, passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at Regency Park and Nursing Rehabilitation Center of Carroll, IA. The Memorial Service will be at 10:30 am, Thursday, Jan. 22, 2026, at the Lampe and Powers Funeral Home in Lake City, IA, with a visitation for 1 hour prior to the service. Robert was born on October 27, 1937, to parents George and Leta (Hutson) Smith in Lake City, IA.

He grew up on the farm and graduated from Lake City High School with the class of 1955. After graduation, on June 26, 1956, Robert enlisted to serve his country in the United States Army until his discharge in July 1967. On November 22, 1967, Robert enlisted to serve his country with the United States Navy. Robert was honorably discharged on November 10, 1976, serving a total of 20 years and three days in the United States Military. During his military career, he served in Fort Ord, Monterey, CA; Wurzburg, Germany; Fort Benning, Chattahoochee, Georgia; Okinawa, Japan; Scott AFB, St. Clair, IL; Heidelberg, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany; San Miguel, Philippines; Bremerhaven, Bremen, Germany; Kami Seya, Japan; and San Diego, CA. Robert joined the United States Postal Service in January of 1977 until his retirement in October of 1997.

Robert was united in marriage to Janet Kaye Fahan on July 5, 1958. This union was blessed with four children: Cheri, Christine, Richard, and Donald. They later divorced in 1965. He married Aiko Okomoto at the American Embassy in Tokyo, Japan, on October 16, 1973.

In his free time, Robert enjoyed spending time with his companion, June Heinrichs, and being outdoors fishing, swimming at the Rec Center, and going golfing. He also loved a good game of cribbage, going to casinos, and wintering in Corpus Christi, Texas. Robert was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. groups and the Catholic Church.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Cheri (Clint) Rehtmeyer, Richard Smith, and Donald (Leah) Smith; grandchildren: Clay (Jaclyn) Rehtmeyer, Jessica (Joel) Goodew, Cameron Germer, Carrie (Lasal) Hines, Rachel (Christopher) Simons; twelve great-grandchildren; brothers William (Jean) Smith, John (Lois) Smith, and Joseph (Lucinda) Smith; and many extended family members and friends.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Christine Smith, wife Aiko Okomoto, and companion June Heinrichs.
