MRHC Offers Advice On How To Recover After The Holidays

Once routines begin to return to normal after the holidays, health officials say it’s common for people to feel physically and emotionally drained. Manning Regional Healthcare Center (MRHC) is encouraging residents to prioritize recovery and self-care in the coming days to rejuvenate themselves. MRHC Mental Health Counselor Hollie Schechinger says, “The weather during this time of year does not help with mental health conditions. The days are shorter; it appears gloomier and colder outside. This causes people to spend more time isolated indoors and not communicate as much with their supports.” She and the staff at MRHC recommend easing back into daily routines by allowing a “soft landing” after the holidays, gradually reestablishing sleep schedules and incorporating brief periods of rest throughout the day. Staying hydrated, eating balanced meals, and choosing one consistent daily activity, such as a walk or morning coffee, can also help restore structure. Winter self-care is equally important, according to Senior Life Solutions therapist Maribeth Christensen, who says, “During the winter months, hibernation looks like intentional rest that helps the mind and body heal, while isolation looks like withdrawing from the world because things feel too hard.” Small practices such as staying connected with others, creating comforting routines, and keeping expectations realistic can help support well-being. MRHC officials say anyone experiencing persistent sadness, anxiety, or stress should seek professional help.
