A Schleswig man avoided serious injury in a crash on Thursday that killed a Mapleton woman in Monona County. According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 7:41 p.m. at the intersection of 130th Street and Walnut Avenue, about five miles east of Mapleton. Authorities say a 2013 Ford Escape, operated by 75-year-old Rosemary Barber of Mapleton, was traveling eastbound and had started to turn around to head back westward when the small-sized SUV was struck on the driver’s side by an eastbound 2018 GMC Sierra, driven by 31-year-old Cody Clausen of Schleswig. Officials note that dense fog at the time likely contributed to the crash. Barber was transported to Burgess Hospital in Onawa by Monona County Emergency Medical Services for treatment of serious injuries but later died at the hospital. Clausen and a passenger in his truck did not sustain any significant injuries. The Monona and Crawford County Sheriff’s Offices and Mapleton Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
