The Greene County Board of Supervisors approved the third and final reading to adjust zoning ordinances for an Iowa Bitcoin company proposing to expand into rural Greene County. Simple Mining is a cryptocurrency mining company stationed in Cedar Falls, and proposed to place 30 modular, single-story units on a privately owned rural land between Jefferson and Scranton. Greene County Development Corporation (GCDC) and Ames Regional Economic Alliance (AREA) Executive Director Greg Piklapp says this will be the first of this type of project for Greene County.
Piklapp says Simple Mining, or any other cryptocurrency mining business could have proposed this project, and the county would have been able to not put limitations on it due to the lack of zoning ordinances. Piklapp says representatives from the company wanted to establish a partnership between the county and itself.
The project is being proposed in rural Greene County as Piklapp says Simple Mining is doing what is called “following the grid”.
Piklapp says the Greene County Board of Supervisors held the public hearing on the proposed zoning ordinance changes and did hear concerns from county residents.
The data center is also going to generate sales tax revenues, have minimal infrastructure damage to the existing land as it is modular and can easily be relocated elsewhere. With the final reading approved on Monday, Simple Mining can now file building permits to the Board of Adjustment. Once permitted, the project is expected to begin construction in spring of 2026 and becoming fully operational by the summer.
