HHS Offers Tips To Avoid Illnesses During Holiday Gatherings

As Iowans gather with friends and family during the holiday season, officials from the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) are reminding the public to take simple steps to prevent the spread of infectious diseases and keep celebrations on track. First and foremost, state health officials urge Iowans to stay home if they are sick, particularly if experiencing fever, diarrhea, or vomiting. Anyone who is ill should avoid preparing food for others to reduce the risk of spreading germs. Frequent handwashing is also encouraged, especially after using the bathroom, before and after food preparation, and before eating. Food safety is another key concern during holiday gatherings. Health officials recommend cooking foods to proper temperatures using a food thermometer, refrigerating leftovers within two hours, and reheating leftovers to at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit. More information about preventing infectious diseases during the holidays is included with this story on our website.
