Iowans Own Fewest Credit Cards Per Person In The Nation

A recent WalletHub report found that Iowans have the fewest credit cards per person of any state in the nation. The personal finance company compiled its rankings based on Q3 2025 metrics, such as the average number of credit cards opened, the average number of cards owned, and the percent change in those figures. According to WalletHub, the typical Iowan has between four and five credit cards, a 1.85-percent increase from last year, and opened 1.23 cards on average last quarter, a 8.9-percent annual increase. North Dakotans and West Virginians followed close behind with the next-fewest number of credit cards. New Hampshirites, New Jerseyans, and Rhode Islanders have the most credit cards per person in the country. Iowa’s ranking was somewhat offset by the increase in the number of cards opened. The report suggests Iowans tend to be more money-conscious, particularly around the holidays, and are less prone to overspending or missed payments.
