An investigation into a fire in an apartment in Exira where a deceased individual was discovered in currently under investigation. According to a press release from Exira Fire and Rescue, departments were dispatched at approximately 6:41 a.m. on Monday to an apartment in the 400 block of S. Carthage Street in Exira. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a fire contained to a single apartment unit and a deceased female inside, identified at 67-year-old Patricia Richter. The occupant from the adjacent apartment was evaluated and transported to Audubon County Memorial Hospital for additional evaluation of possible smoke inhalation. Several agencies assisted Exira Fire and Rescue in the call, including: the Brayton Fire Department, Audubon County Sheriff’s Office, Audubon County Emergency Management, Audubon County Medical Examiner Investigator, Audubon County 911 Communications, the State Fire Marshal Office and MidAmerican Energy.
