MRHC: Setting Healthy Boundaries During The Holidays

Manning Regional Healthcare Center (MRHC) is encouraging residents to set healthy boundaries and manage expectations to protect their mental well-being during the holiday season. According to MRHC Mental Health Counselor Hollie Schechinger, this time of year is filled with various types of stressors, whether financial, emotional, or physical. Schechinger says, “The holidays are viewed as a joyful season, but the pressure to be happy can increase stress, especially for those already managing mental health conditions. This expectation can heighten feelings of depression or anxiety this time of year.” MRHC says unclear boundaries and unrealistic expectations can lead to guilt, exhaustion, and emotional strain. Staff recommend establishing clear limits on time, conversations, and responsibilities; recognizing personal energy levels; and preparing backup plans, such as identifying a quiet space or arranging transportation for an early exit. Residents are also encouraged to use gentle, direct language when declining activities or changing plans. Schechinger says focusing on the present and embracing imperfect moments can help create healthier, more meaningful holiday experiences.
