Republican candidate Wendy Larson won the special election yesterday (Tuesday), filling the vacancy in Iowa House District 7. Larson was campaigning against Democrat Rachel Burns, both of Odebolt, for the open seat created after previous Representative Mike Sexton of Rockwell City resigned in September after being appointed by the Trump administration to serve as director for Iowa’s U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development office. Unofficial results from the Iowa Secretary of State’s website say Larson received 2,817 or just over 70 percent of the votes, with Burns having 1,201 or 29.89 percent of the votes in favor of her. Voter turnout was at 18.86 percent, with 4,027 ballots cast of the over 21,000 registered voters in the area. Iowa House District 7 covers all of Sac, Calhoun, and Pocahontas Counties and the western portion of Webster County.
