The Iowa Local Technical Assistance Program is again offering small cities a chance to upgrade their work zone safety equipment through the Iowa DOT-funded Work Zone Sign Package Program. The initiative helps communities with fewer than 10,000 residents obtain essential traffic control devices that meet the 2023 Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices standards. The package includes “One Lane Road Ahead,” “Road Work Ahead,” and “Be Prepared to Stop” signs, along with Type III barricades, 28-inch traffic cones, 42-inch channelizers, sign stands, and Class 2 safety vests. All equipment is sized for lower-speed city streets and features high-intensity retro-reflective sheeting for nighttime visibility. Many smaller maintenance garages are using signage initially purchased decades ago. Applications are open annually through Dec. 31, with approximately 10 cities selected each year. Glidden, Jefferson, and Sac City were selected for the packages last year. The program aims to help small communities improve safety for street crews and motorists while easing the financial burden of purchasing compliant traffic control equipment. Submission forms are included with this story on our website.
