New Opportunities in Carroll, in collaboration with the Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Middle School, are looking for volunteers to make an impact in a student’s life by becoming a mentor. New Opportunities Prevention Supervisor Nancy Rowedder says the program started last year with three matches, as a prevention approach to build trust, self-esteem to students through a positive relationship with an adult outside of the child’s family.
Mentoring Coordinator Ann Willison says the program currently has seven student-mentor matches, with a goal to increase that to 12 to 15. Willison says mentors volunteer one day a week to meet with a student 5th through 8th grade that they are paired with at the Carroll Middle School building.
Mentors must be 18 years old, but Willison says 16-year-olds with a driver’s license may also qualify to participate as a mentor. Anyone with additional questions or that would like to volunteer in the program can reach out to Willison by calling 712-792-9266 Ext. 1021 or email at awillison@newopp.org. Rowedder says to mark your calendar for February for a fundraising event to support the Tiger Mentoring program.
Registration for the Puzzles, Pizza and Pop event is due by Jan. 13, and can do so by scanning the QR code available above or by reaching out to Willison. Rowedder and Willison encourage all who are considering to sign up for mentoring to do so, as they say it is such a rewarding experience for both individuals.
