Iowa HHS Records Season’s First Flu Death

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today (Friday) reported the state’s first influenza-related death of the 2025-26 respiratory virus season. Officials said the individual was an older adult from southwest Iowa. The latest Respiratory Virus Surveillance Report shows flu activity remains very low statewide, and hospitals are reporting low numbers of respiratory-related admissions. Despite that slow start to the season, state health leaders urged Iowans to take precautions as holiday gatherings approach. State Medical Director Dr. Robert Kruse says, “Holiday gatherings bring us together with family and friends we may not see often. To keep those celebrations, our workplaces and our communities safe and healthy, I encourage everyone to stay home when feeling sick and to talk with your healthcare provider about vaccination.” According to HHS, flu shots remain the best protection against serious illness during peak flu season, especially for people with chronic health conditions. State officials remind Iowans to stay home when sick, frequently clean high-touch surfaces, wash their hands often, and cover coughs and sneezes.
