One of the Carroll Middle School’s (CMS) mock trial teams has advanced to compete in the state contest at the beginning of next month. The CMS teams traveled to Sioux City on Saturday, Nov. 18, for the regional competition, taking one of the top spots. This year’s featured fictional case is State of Iowa v. Dannie Dawson, in which the high-achieving student, Dawson, is accused of burning down a university campus building after receiving a poor grade from a professor. Mock trial introduces Iowa students to the practice of law, courtroom procedures, and more. Students take on the roles of either attorneys or witnesses and must make their case, either exonerating their client for the defense team or securing a conviction for the prosecution. The 14-student team spent months preparing for their cases and was coached by Steven Bieret, an eighth-grade social studies teacher, and by volunteer high school coaches, Jesse Gay and Brennan Volstedt. The team will travel to Altoona on Dec. 1 and Dec. 2 to compete against teams from across the state. A list of the CMS qualifiers is included below.
