A Fort Dodge man has been sentenced to nearly five years in federal prison after admitting he illegally possessed a stolen firearm during a 2024 traffic stop. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa, 36-year-old Jammonttay Coleman was sentenced Thursday to 57 months in prison after pleading guilty in July to possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. Prosecutors said Coleman had a stolen 9mm pistol in his possession with a large-capacity magazine when Fort Dodge police stopped him for speeding through a construction zone on Aug. 25. Officers reported smelling marijuana, and when Coleman eventually exited the vehicle, a bag of marijuana fell to the ground. A search of the vehicle uncovered the pistol, which had been reported stolen a month earlier during a fight in Otho. Coleman admitted to taking the weapon and possessing it despite being a felon and a marijuana user, both of which bar firearm possession under federal law. Coleman was on parole from a 2018 felony conviction in Sac County for an armed robbery in Sac City. Coleman pled guilty to second-degree burglary and assault while participating in a felony in that case, and several other felony charges, including first-degree robbery, willful injury, theft, and others, were dismissed by the courts. Coleman remains in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending transfer to a federal prison.
