Gov. Kim Reynolds issued an order today (Friday) to lower flags in Iowa to half-staff in honor of former Vice President Dick Cheney, who died earlier this week at the age of 84. Cheney served in the George W. Bush administration from 2001 to 2009, and previously served in Congress and as the U.S. Secretary of Defense under President George H. W. Bush. Reynolds says, “Dick Cheney will be remembered as a remarkable statesman—in Congress and the Executive Branch, in times of peace and war, at home and abroad. Above all, he will be remembered as a patriot who dedicated his life to the service of his country. Kevin and I offer our sincere condolences and prayers to his family. May he rest in peace.” Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be half-staff on all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties, and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect. The order will remain in effect until sunset on Thursday, Nov. 20, which is the scheduled date for his interment.
