Four libraries in the listening area are recipients of a $10,000 gift through the Carnegie Corporation of New York, in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. Between 1886 and 1917, Scottish immigrant Andrew Carnegie funded the construction of over 1,600 public libraries across the country. To this day, 1,280 are still in operation, including the Carroll, Audubon, Rockwell City, and Lake City public libraries. Each of those libraries will receive $10,000, to be used at their respective library board’s discretion, but intended to foster civic participation and bring people together in support of Carnegie’s free public library movement. Funding from the $20 million special initiative for eligible libraries will be distributed in January 2026. A map of the country’s Carnegie Libraries across America can be found included below.
