Gov. Kim Reynolds Announces Support For Food Banks And Pantries Due To Delay In SNAP Benefits

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds announced today (Thursday) that the state will provide interim support for food banks and pantries due to the USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits not being issued in November due to the federal government shutdown. The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) continues to host meetings with the six regional food banks across the state, to gain an understanding of their needs of increased staffing, distribution of items, and additional food inventory as they prepare for the increased demand. Reynolds has directed many departments, such as HHS, Volunteer Iowa and the Iowa National Guard to recruit, distribute and to use existing state funds to match cash donations to the six banks, who collectively serve 1,500 local agencies across all counties in Iowa, beginning on Nov. 3. Reynolds says “Government plays an important role in supporting its citizens, but we each have a personal responsibility to care for the people in our communities, especially those in need. That’s why the state will match up to $1 million in contributions made by Iowans for regional food banks across our state. Together, we can make an even bigger difference for our neighbors who need help during this time.” Private sector organizations are also stepping up, including Iowa’s three Medicaid affiliates, Hy-Vee, Fareway and the Iowa Pork Producers Association with financial contributions and food donations to banks across the state. Here in the area, the Carroll Community of Concern is accepting donations of money and non-perishable food items as they prepare for the influx of food insecurity. Taco John’s in Carroll will also be offering a free meal of a bean or beef burrito, with an order of potato oles for anyone in need by asking for the “Community Special”, along with New Hope Village hosting a food drive through Nov. 15, accepting non-perishable food items at all their bargain shop locations. A list of ways to donate or help out here locally is included below.
