With the budget standoff and government shutdown now entering its third week, personal finance company WalletHub examined which states are most impacted by the disruption and found that Iowa is the second least-affected state in the nation. The report compared five metrics across all 50 states and the District of Columbia, including the share of federal jobs, federal contract dollars per capita, and the percentage of families receiving food assistance. Iowa ranked 50th overall, suggesting Iowans can expect minimal economic impact from the shutdown. The state ranked 48th in its share of federal jobs, 39th in federal contract dollars per capita, 49th in real estate as a percentage of gross state product, 46th in access to national parks, and 38th in the number of families receiving food assistance benefits. The places most affected by the shutdown, according to WalletHub’s review, are the District of Columbia, Hawaii, and New Mexico, while Minnesota, Iowa, and Indiana close out the list of least affected states.
