The Iowa Attorney General’s Office released a ruling today (Monday) that found officers were legally justified in their use of lethal force on Sept. 6 in Greene County. According to state officials, Camryn Leroy Stonehocker of Boone was shot by Officer Marshall Moore of the Boone Police Department following a lengthy vehicular pursuit. At approximately 10:24 p.m., Moore attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Stonehocker on Highway 30 in Boone. Stonehocker did not yield to law enforcement’s lights and sirens and fled. The pursuit continued westbound for over 20 miles, eventually coming to a stop in Greene County near T Avenue. Authorities say Stonehocker exited his vehicle while wielding a large survival knife and ignored commands to drop the weapon. A separate officer, Josh Olsen from the Boone Police Department, approached Stonehocker from behind, and Stonehocker wheeled and turned the knife toward him. Moore fired, fearing for Olsen’s and his own life. Officials also documented Stonehocker’s rising frustrations with law enforcement due to a recent traffic citation, combined with increasingly argumentative behavior and marijuana use.
