Portions of Exira are under a boil advisory, while the rest of the community is asked to practice extreme conservation measures of water until further notice. While attempting to complete the water main project, the system lost pressure, causing the potential of contamination. Water must be boiled for at least one minute if going to be used for consumption if residents reside along North Kilworth Street, on Harrison Street between Carthage and Kilworth Street and Church Street from Kilworth to Cottage Street. Boiling or bottled water must be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth and food preparation until the order has been lifted. Customers can still use the water for bathing and general cleaning purposes. City officials have also released that Regional Water Rural Water Association (RWRWA) has announced a Level Red advisory due to an accident that occurred in eastern Shelby County, which caused a power spike, damage to the pump at Tower 4 with no water flowing to the tower. Residents in eastern Shelby, Audubon and Cass Counties, including communities of Exira, Brayton, Kirkman and Elk Horn are asked to conserve water as much as possible. Tips to save water include shortening showers and turning off tap when brushing teeth, run appliances with full loads only and to use water-efficient fixtures and settings. Anyone with questions is asked to contact the Regional Water Office at 712-343-2413 for the Red Level Advisory and Exira City Hall at 712 268-2187 for the boil order.
