A Scranton woman has been sentenced to 15 years in prison last week after being found guilty by jury of peers for intentionally lighting house on fire and committing insurance fraud. According to Greene County District Court records, 28-year-old Conner Laine Groves was found guilty on four felony counts, including: first-degree fraudulent practice, second-degree arson, both class C felonies, conspiracy to commit felony, and insurance fraud, both class D felonies, as well as possession of a controlled substance, marijuana, a serious misdemeanor. Groves, along with friends were reported by witnesses to move items out of the house days prior to lighting it on fire on Oct. 2, 2023. The house was deemed a total loss and also caused over $10,000 in damages to nearby buildings. In a claim to insurance, Groves reported several items as damaged that were later discovered at her new residence. After the guilty verdict, Groves did file a motion for a new trial, which was denied. She has been given credit for previous time served and is also ordered to pay victim restitution. Another individual that aided Groves, 28-year-old Logan Wayne Grazier is also facing four felony charges: two class C felonies for first-degree criminal mischief and second-degree arson, along with two class D felonies of insurance fraud and conspiracy to commit felony. Grazier has pled not guilty and faces a jury trial on Nov. 4 at the Greene County Courthouse. If convicted, Grazier can face a maximum sentence of up to 30 years in prison and over $47,000 in fines if convicted.
