Iowa House Representative Mike Sexton, a republican from Rockwell City, submitted his letter of resignation from the Iowa House effective today (Friday). Sexton was first elected in 2014, serving as the Chair of the House Agriculture Committee since 2022. His resignation comes due to him accepting an appointed position by President Donald Trump, as State Director for Iowa Rural Development. Sexton says “It truly has been an honor to serve for House District 7 and the people of Iowa as a State Representative. I am deeply grateful for the trust and support of my constituents over these years, and for the opportunity to work alongside dedicated colleagues to advance meaningful legislation. I carry with me immense gratitude for the experiences, relationships, and progress we’ve achieved together.” Speaker of the Iowa House Pat Grassley says Sexton was a steadfast leader for the Iowa agriculture community, saying “Representative Sexton’s commitment, and his tireless work ethic will leave a lasting impact. Mike’s steadfast leadership for Iowa’s agriculture community will be missed. His advocacy for our farmers and rural communities has helped strengthen our state’s backbone. I wish him the very best.” Governor Kim Reynolds has announced a special election will be set to fill the vacancy.
