The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), with the help of a local facilitator will be hosting the fourth annual Walk with SW Iowa for suicide prevention awareness this Saturday in Manning. AFSP SW Iowa Committee Chair and walk organizer Amanda Arneson says she has always been passionate about mental health and being able to help individuals find resources to help them in the ways they need. September is Suicide Prevention Month and she and her husband came together to talk about getting something organized to continue spreading awareness.
The Suicide Prevention Walk will start at the Manning City Park with registration or check in at 1 p.m. with a speaker and short ceremony at 1:45 p.m. Arneson says before the two-mile walk begins.
There is no fee to participate but donations are strongly encouraged to continue with research and to promote mental health resources in underserved communities. Arneson says there will be activities, food, and stations set up to gather more information, along with a memorial tent.
Each year, Arneson says the event raises on average $3,000 that is donated back to AFSP to continue to promote suicide prevention awareness and she says they have already surpassed the goal but would like to see how much more they can raise to help with the cause. Arneson says if anything is taken away from this, it’s that it is okay to not be okay but you do not have to go through it alone.
